Marvel Anime Wolverine/Iron Man -Trailers

A little while ago in the feedback show we spoke briefly about Marvel developing Anime versions of their flagship characters with an eye to breaking in more fully to the Japanese market, and at the same time giving the western fans something with a very different flavour, now we’re seeing what that looks like.  There have been print versions of the Marvel characters done in the anime/manga style, however this collaboration looks to be something different again.

The folks taking on the Marvel Universe are Japanese production giant Mad House, who in the past have given us such ass-kickery as  Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and Wicked City, along with high profile East/West collaborations like segments in Batman: Gotham Knight , The Animatrix and Highlander the Search for Vengeance. They have a unique flair for great looking action and stylised character design which is evident in these trailers. The other name associated with this co-production is none other than Warren Ellis, fresh from his scripting on G.I. Joe Resolute.  He won’t be doing full script but detailed plots from which the Japanese writers will develop dialogue and so on.

Iron Man seems to be the least changed of the two we’ve seen so far with Mecha designs being a day to day part of anime, but Wolverine certainly looks like he’s been thwacked firmly in the back of the head with the anime stick. It is up to you whether it’s your cup of tea, but its definitely very very interesting.

and here’s some Wolverine goodness!

So how do you think they look in anime style? I like the hell out of Iron Man, i’m still not too sure on the Wolverine though…

What do you all think?  Is it the future of Marvel or a cultural dead end?

  1. The ironman one I am least excited about…mainly because the wolverine one is so damn cool looking and:

    1. Its madhouse – same people who did the classic Ninja Scroll.
    2. Wolverine is a Bishi – a arse kicking immortal Samurai Bishi but still a Bishi.

    I disagree, Scott.

Their Wolverine differs too much from the archtype… looks like ‘whack some claws’ on your standard manga hero and Logan’s your uncle.

The Iron Man bizzo on the other hand (also Mad House)… well… I need new pants.

The ironman one looks really cool, can’t wait to see it :)

The ‘wolverine one’ looks great, and would be fun to watch if it wasn’t trying to be wolverine. If it was just some Japanese ninja guy who somehow managed to get claws or whatever, sure… but that guy’s not wolverine…

If nothing else it doesn’t fit with the already established Wolverine story… and before anyone gets stuck into me about that, wolverine’s origin story (of how he got adamantium fused to his bones) is well established… even if this mullet toting ninja was him, he’d only have bone claws at that point…

But yes, if it wasn’t trying to be wolverine I’d be more than happy to watch that… great animation, as it stands I could still enjoy watching it, I’d just have to tell the part of my brain that’s telling me it’s wrong to shut up :)
