K9 the Series – TV Trailer

Once upon a time in a land called Britain there was a TV show called Doctor Who… and it was good. It may have had shonkey sets and hand me down costumes but it was “The Little Show That Could.”  At an indeterminate point in the 70’s a producer decided that the show needed to be a little more “kid friendly” and so the character of a barely-animate robot dog was added to the series.

For many this was not good.  It was not good for the lead actor most of all! Suddenly he had to film scenes on his knees or seated under a console just to involve the fibreglass abomination. Yet the kids loved him.  They loved him so much they tried to give him his own spin-off series called K9 and Company. The VHS ripped evidence of which can still be found floating ominously around the darkest , most unsavory corners of the web with other such horrors as the Star Wars Holiday Special *Spits* and the 1994 Roger Corman Fantastic Four movie! *spits twice*

Clearly not one to learn from history, Australia’s Park Entertainment has decided that the character has enough interest left in him (despite being relegated to a black hole for the last couple of seasons of the Sarah Jane Adventures) to warrant a 26 episode Tv show.  And here’s the trailer!

I will admit it seems to keep the Doctor Who, Sarah Jane Adventures and even Torchwood tone quite well.  And due to it being set in the near future i can’t see it conflicting directly with any other series’.  I am even slightly impressed that they seem to have kept John Leeson on as the voice of K-9, even if the scripts sound like they may be in need of some quick lead therapy. (Lead therapy being the repeated introduction of hot lead into the subject via a small explosive charge)

What do you think?  Are we going to have to sweep it under the carpet like a Holiday Special? Or will this be on more beloved piece of the huge tapestry that is the Doctor Who universe?

Well, they had to have something to finish off the appeal to us juvies at the time, after the Gryffindor scarf and the jelly babies Tom Baker had to contend with. As for this latest foray into Who-sploitation, I can only say it’s either going to be meh or shite plus. The beholders I could write off, but the obvious creepy villain Dioning his cane, not to mention the true camp model of K9, does not bode well, imho.

This sets me to thinking of other offshoots of Doctor Who that maybe they haven’t thought of yet. Remember how Micky was always whining about being the robot dog? Well now that the robot dog has his show how about a show completely based on Mickey? Maybe a show based on the Daleks? Maybe it’s time they EXTERMINATED these ridiculous spin offs of Doctor Who, but I can’t blame them for making hay while the sun is shinning.

Here’s a thought BBC, how about a new season of the Doctor himself.

i can totally see a spinoff focusing on the more urban adventures of mickey, though the last season-ender all but plonked him in torchwood. I was surprised indeed not to see him in the cardiff Hub. but then again after “Children of Earth” i dread to think what might have happened to the poor bugger.

i don’t think daleks can hold a show. no emotional connection.

and fear not Morbious there will be a new doctor who season early next year.

until then we have to console ourselves with a doctor who appearance in the Sarah Jane Adventures (starting this week)

A new Doctor Who Animated adventure called “Dreamland”

and 3 more specials, starting in November with “Water of Mars”, then at least 2 more over christmas and new year. culminating in “The End of Time”

ok so we’ve got a bit of a wait till the 2010 new series… but we have a fair whack of stuff to keep us going til then.

2009 has been a funny sort of year in Who…
