Goemon Trailer
Kazuaki Kiriya first came to the attention of us (Cool) Shite folks WAY back in episode 2 of the podcast with his CGI heavy action romp “Casshern”, which was based of a popular 1970′s anime series by Tatsunoko Productions. While not exactly blowing us away with its deep and involving plot, it did have a guy running around and blowing seven shades of crap out of hundreds of robots. Which was cool.
Now Kiriya San is directing another action martial arts romp, though this one is not based on any specific Anime or Manga series. In some ways it seems to be vaguely based on history, but as much as it is historical, it also seems histerical!
a little Wikipedia Goemon History:
Ishikawa Goemon (石å· äºâ€Ã¨Â¡â€ºÃ©â€“ or 石å· äºâ€Ã¥Â³è¡›é–?, 1558-1594) was a legendary ninja warrior and bandit hero who stole gold and valuables and gave them to the poor. There is little historical information on Goemon’s life, and thus he has become a folk hero, whose background and origins have been widely speculated upon. He is notable for being boiled alive after a failed assassination attempt on Toyotomi Hideyoshi. A large iron kettle-shaped bathtub is now called a Goemon-buro (Goemon-bath).
In one version of the story, Goemon tried to assassinate Hideyoshi to avenge the death of his wife and capture of his son, Gobei. He entered Hideyoshi’s room but knocked a bell off a table. The noise awoke the samurai guards and he was captured. He was sentenced to death by being boiled alive in an iron cauldron along with his young son, but was able to save his son by holding him above the oil.
In another version, Goemon wanted to kill Hideyoshi because he was a despot. When he entered Hideyoshi’s room, he was detected by a mystical incense burner. He was executed on August 24 along with his whole family by being boiled in oil.
In yet a third version, Goemon stole a prized songbird of Hideyoshi’s, but the bird sang. His whole family was executed, but Gobei was saved by Goemon.
It looks shiney, splashy, kicky, bitey, and utterly cool. I like my chop socky with a bit of CGI and Gloss and damn if this don’t looks like its right up my alley. Thoughts? And do make sure you go check out what we had to say about Casshern SO long ago…

This looks cool indeed!! Sad that the Casshern storyline dragged for too long as the visual eye candy and the artsy photography were just damn sweet and cool! Worthy of spinning the DVD for guilty-pleasure watching!! Kiriya did a fine job on Casshern regardless & I so hope Goemon gets a US screening, even if they show it in New York I’ll go the extra mile if it means getting to watch on a big screen!!
it doesn’t pretend to bee anything other than utterly ridiculous sword and shuriken ninja chop socky action…
i am SO there.
