Mr & Mrs Smith

Posted by Bruce on June 14th, 2005

Mr & Mrs Smith

A married couple (Pitt and Jolie) are getting bored with their quiet domestic life. What they don’t know, however, is that they’re both assassins, secretly hopping the world and killing for hire. But their separate lives are about to collide when each finds out their next target is their own spouse.

My Impressions

This film is actually quite fun and funny. The premise is nothing new and the casting is what you would expect, but it works. The film has three sections to it that build the characters, show us what they do and how good they are at it. Then the film makers bring in the action and a small and largely nothing twist. I am going to go out on a limb here on first impressions but I found it to be as good as True Lies. It is a comedy with some kick arse action that kept me wanting more. In other words they finally succeeded in making a blockbuster this year that gave me my monies worth. Brad and Angela are quite good together throwing one liners and bouncing sight gags. We get the recommended dose of holiwood eye candy with each of them getting semi naked. We see lots of guns and explosions, with the right amount of bullshit cgi. The tech in it is completely over the top, but I just sat back and loved it. It is pure candy for the brain, and well on first impressions I gotta say it was the right amount of sweet.

Summary

Fun, with double helpings of Angela in bondage gear… gotta love that!

Interesting to read your opinion on this one. Mark Kermode recently reviewed it and wasn’t so taken with it.

I dug this… OK… its obviously not perfect…. but the 4 word review would go… “pretty people with guns” nuff said….

It was fun to watch in the cinema… not too long… not too dumb…. lots of stuff eploded…. I felt I had my moneys worth

I heard Mark Kermode review of it, he basically doen’t like Angela, it seems in anything. Fair enough. It is complete fluff, but I really dug it. I am in Sydney for work this week and took my co-work to it who doesn’t care much for film and he liked it too.

Mark is a weird reviewer I find. He has a very yes/no approach without giving much detail.

Bruce, Mark Kermode is famous for his rants. Quite I find he ha a decent reason for not liking something but the force with which he pushes it can be excessive. I like the way he is willing to respect someone else’s view as well though.

Is the Cameron you mentioned the guy from the Movie Show podcast?
He should do some by himself.

Yeah I quite liked this one too. It was a bit slow to begin with but I was pleasantly surprised by the non-corniness (ok well I didn’t feel like rolling my eyes for a change). To be honest, I never really thought much of Angelina Jolie until I saw her in True Women, but she’s growing on me. On the other hand I really don’t care what Brad Pitt does in a movie so long as he’s there…. LOL

i really liked it, the sequence when they were kicking the crap out of each other was well really well sorted, violence, sex, guns, the best CSM in the business, even if those lips are noonbiodegradeable— shit man what else do you need in life?

Doug Lehman’s getting good at these lite technothrillers
