Ordinary Decent Criminal
Posted by Bruce on June 2nd, 2005
Michael Lynch is Dublin’s most notorious criminal, his brazen robberies making him the bane of the Gardaàand a hero to his fellow working class city Northsiders. When not playing happy families with his two wives - sisters Christine and Lisa - and his children, Lynch is busy plotting elaborate heists, thinking as much about the showmanship of it all as he is the loot involved. On his case is Garda Noel Quigley, his determination to convict Lynch slowly turning into an obsession. Inevitably, a showdown looms.
My Impressions
This is a funny and charming little film of cat and mouse. Kevin Spacey does a great job being Lynch, the criminal mastermind that robs banks and still turns up to collect the doll every forthnight. The robberys are done in a mostly non-voilent way and always leaves the cops running aorund in circles. His gang likes how he does the job, but after a while other factors, including the police and IRA start complicating things. Distrust and close calls start to make more issues for the gang and Lynch’s family. The film is clear showing how each side has no clue of whats really going on. At times you feel like Lynch has no clue either, but really, like all great cat and mouse films, he knows the mark. The film is funny and plenty of action sequences and some blood.
Summary
All in all, this film is a nice night in. It has plenty to keep everyone entertained and Kevin Spacey does a great job being the lovable crim.
