The Virgin suicides is a beautiful story about five sisters, and their mysterious existence, told in the words of the neighborhood boys who worshiped them and who come together 20 years later to try and solve the mystery of the Lisbon sisters. It is a solitary story of the girls isolation and the sleepy portrayal of how they watched powerless as their fragile lives disappeared.

My Impressions

I have been meaning to see this film for ages, and finally have done it. This flick really is a different slice on life. The story is simple and makes no exuses about giving away the end result at the beginning. It actually make it more interesing knowing the ending so the chain of events seem more motivated. I am not sure where the title comes from for this film, yes there are suicides, but they weren’t all virgins. Anyway the performaces are strong and interesting by the range of cast members. The setting makes the issues brought up more interesting, but doesn’t go that indepth into it. That in itself is a good and bad point. Unlike the brillient Dead Poets Society, the use of suicide is a resolution without an indepth explored path. The reasons for the end certimstances are shown in a detacted way to make us think. We get the ideas around it, but like real suicide, there really isn’t anyway of knowing why someone took their own life. This film came out with much fanfare and deservatily so, and I am glad to see Sofia’s next film Lost in Translation as a nice step up.

Summary

Interesting cast and story but maybe a little slow for people wanting something more wordy. A film with some thought provoking unsaid commentary. I think this will make future audiences debating for years to come.
