The Horseman – Movie Review
Sometimes a film comes along and slips under the radar without any the attention it deserves: The Horseman is the perfect example of this. An independent Australian film shot in Brisbane, written & directed by first-timer Steven Kastrissios.
After losing his teenage daughter (Jesse) to a drugs overdose, Christian (Peter Marshall) is sent a porn video tape. The tape shows what may have been Jesse’s last few hours. Determined to find out what happened to his daughter, Christian tracks down the tape’s distributor which sets him on road trip to find out the truth.
Despite the synopsis I read; this is not your typical revenge film but one that shows a father’s grief for his child. Christian simply needs to know the how, the why & the who surrounding his daughter death. His doesn’t have any intention of killing anyone but when a throw away is made, he can’t control his temper & he lashes out. With porn distributor dead, he takes & destroys all the copies of the film. He follows the leads to track down each the men involved in the making of the porn film and ultimately his daughter’s death.
When the men fail to cooperate, he beats & tortures them until they give him the names & information he needs to find her killer. Peter Marshall’s potent performance as a man tormented by the void in his life is what makes the film so powerful. His character is reduced cutting himself just so he feels like he is alive. Christian’s actions are given some vindication when he finds out who sent him the video tape & realises what these people are capable of.
His redemption comes in the form a young runaway who he befriends & protects; giving him a second chance to be a good father.
This film not only has good performances & a great story but it delivers some strong realistic scenes, squirm worthy torture & no nonsense killings. This film is not for everyone but neither is just for gore hounds & torture porn lovers.
