Land of the Lost – Movie Review

I was looking forward to watching this movie, thinking it would be funny or at the very least interesting. However I have to say I am extremely disappointed. The only redeeming thing about this movie was the actress Anna Friel, with her charming British accent.

Will Ferrel is Dr. Rick Marshall, a supposed genius scientist with a horrible attitude. I had an feeling I wouldn’t like him before I started watching, because of how Will has acted in other roles. True to form, Will makes the doctor seem hopelessly stupid, ignorant and just plain rude. I might have been able to accept a stupid doctor, as it is meant to be a spoof comedy, but his attitude really ground my nerves. The other characters in their twisted foursome (played by Danny McBride, Anna Friel and Jorma Tacconne), are much more likeable and are easier to laugh at. You couldn’t have this film without Will, but I still find him unnecessary.

Now I realise that saying this film is ‘unrealistic’ is not the point – you aren’t going to see this film for its plot. Having said that, I’m sure if the makers of this film actually tried, they could have made a much better film. It is horribly clichéd and trying desperately for laughs. I’m sure you’ll find it much funnier if you’ve actually seen the show, but as someone who hasn’t, I did not find the slapstick comedy amusing at all. There are a couple of stupid running gags that are not funny, and I don’t know how they ever thought they were. One such gag is being constantly chased by a Tyrannosaurus, and somehow they always manage to outrun said dinosaur. I rolled my eyes several times, because I knew it would be too much to hope that Dr Marshall would actually be eaten. I could dream though.

To see this film, you would have to go in with little expectation and a love for Will Ferrel. Make sure to turn off your brain, because otherwise you might see the gaping plot holes. If you want to see a stupid movie that’s mildly amusing, this is the one to see. I give it a rating of pure Shite, though I’m sure plenty of people will see it and love it. God help the remains of civilisation.

Thanks, I’m glad you liked it.

I admit that was the only part that made me giggle too. It made me like the T-Rex very much :)
