I will agree with what you said. However I have just watched L: Change the World. which while it had some good points it was in my opinion one of the craziest plots that made next to no sense. Whereas I felt the first two films did a relatively good attempt at capturing the story in a film version. This story that had no material to base it off had a feeling at many points of wallowing and not knowing what to do next. I will say that I could not stop watching it mainly because the actor who portrays L does another amazing job in my opinion. Anyway i am done rambling

As someone who enjoyed Death Note (all the versions of media of it) the films are not the best version. And really the only reason its this hyped is that the Anime and even the Manga (both better than the films) really became big. They were much better and a tad less messy plot wise but had flaws. I still liked these films and they are enjoyable even if they seem like made for TV at times. Still worth a look if you like this kind of Japanise movie.

And yeah its pretty much just a part one I found part 2 to be much better. (They even changed the ending and somehow kept the impact at the same time)

So yeah thats my thoughts on it.

Hey Asimov, I’m not familiar at all with the anime series, but I dug both this and the sequel quite a bit (The review for the sequel is forthcoming here on Cool Shite), they both seemed to balance the task of adapting a series with an inherently episodic feel into a larger narrative pretty well.

I enjoyed the twists and turns of the films, though I admit that I did have to smile and roll my eyes here or there when either Light or L somehow managed to know what the other was doing five or six moves ahead of time. It seemed a little over the top with the deductive logic, but I suppose that’s why I don’t play chess: I don’t think far enough ahead.

Sorry Azimov, i think you may be alone in defending the source. But deathnote… well, i can’t really comment on the anime, as i haven’t watched it all the way through, but i thought the film was a bit of a fizzer. Not bad, but not exactly excitement plus!

oh and Azimov, please don’t take offense at our bagging of The Source, it is not a personal attack on you or you taste in films, it is simply our demonstration of full hatred for that particular film.

I personally liked the ending this two part film gave a lot more than the ending that the manga and anime had. But that could just be me. Remember before you get offended at me I am defending Highlander the Source which I seem to be the only person doing so. Anyway back to death note. It was an interesting film and I thought caught a lot of the ideas it needed to capture.

LOL, devilman the live action… yeah that was pretty much an entire reservoir of suck really wasn’t it… i was SO keen for it and it ended up just so… Blah. you know?

oh well. one of these days they’ll nail a live action translation… one day we should hunt up the live action version of Wicked City. if memory serves its hilariously bad.

I most likely gave this higher marks based on watching it after the live action version of Devilman, which was pretty bad all the way around.

i’m pretty sure that in our audio review of this film a few months ago we all came out pretty “Meh” too. its an interesting little live action version of an anime, but personally i just don’t know what all the hype is about…
