S & M Hunter – Review

  • Directed by Shuji Kataoka
  • Starring Shiro Shimomoto, Hiromi Saotome, Yutaka Ikejima, Ayu Kiyokawa, Bunmei Tobayama and Akira Fukuda

Okay, so first off I suppose I should mention that this film is a ËœPink Film’, which amounts to low budget softcore porn in the Japanese film world. They’re filmed in the space of a week, generally run about an hour or so in length and sport a specific number of sex scenes per film to fit into this genre. From everything I’ve read about them, they also feature some of the most outrageous scenarios you could imagine, as the people making these go out of their way to make them their own; the wilder the better.

These basically unknown films are now seeing the light of day courtesy of Pink Eiga.

The film opens with the Dungeon Master (Ikejima) ushering in a new client at the Pleasure Dungeon. He describes the various pleasures on offer to Joe (Tobayama), each one in turn demonstrated by the DM himself, addressing the camera as he gives the price structure ($200 to receive an enema? C’mon!) until Joe settles on Sadism.

He forces a woman dressed as a nun to lick his shoes, then whips her for a bit until the DM steps in, telling him that his heart isn’t in it. He introduces the S & M Hunter (Shimomoto), decked out in rubber looking knee high boots, a duster that hides the ropes he carries in holsters like a Wild West gunfighter, a skull adorned eyepatch that covers his left eye and topped off with a bowler hat. The S & M Hunter snaps the nun into a complicated series of knots, strumming at the one between her things and driving her wild.

Impressed, Joe relates his tale of woe as the S & M Hunter calmly sits and receives head across the table from him. Joe’s boyfriend Jack (Fukuda) has been kidnapped by a girl gang called The Bombers, who are keeping him as a sex slave. The S & M Hunter agrees to retrieve him and they set out walking (?) to The Bombers hideout, the Hunter, the DM, the nun and Joe.

Jack meanwhile is tied to a bed as various members of the gang give him head to tease him into excitement so that they can have sex with him. These sequences are competent enough for softcore, but this being Japan, most of the action is partially obscured (in arty ways, mind you) by chairs or the bars on the bed, etc.

The Bombers are about to initiate new member Meg (Saotome) into the gang, but are distracted amid an escape attempt by Jack, who is easily recaptured. This leads to a topless arm-wrestling scene in which the loser’s hand will land on the knives stuck into the tabletop.

More forced sex leads to a montage of the rescue team walking through the forest, etc., and then the S& M Hunter leaves his companions behind to make the actual rescue. This involves members of the gang wrapped in fishnetting with strategically placed vibrators driving them mad, and one gloriously complicated scene in which a girl is trapped in a full spider web of knots and rope that drives her wild as he strums it like a guitar string.

S & M Hunter is able to defeat the leader of the gang, Machi (Kiyokawa) and reunite the lovers in a pretty unconvincing scene between two men who are obviously not gay, but whatever, it’s low budget craziness, right?

Still to come we have Machi seeking out the Hunter for more punishment, as well as a showdown with Meg, who we’ve learned is a woman from the Hunter’s past with something of an axe to grind.

So, um, if you’re even the slightest bit sensitive, this isn’t going to be for you, because every type of offensive imagery is trotted out just for exercise, from the sex with the girl dressed as a nun in the Dungeon, to Meg dressing in full Nazi regalia (?) in front of a giant Swastika flag before a showdown with the Hunter, to the very odd sexual politics spouted by the Hunter throughout the film: There’s something to offend almost everyone here.

I enjoyed the film, but I’ll freely admit to probably being on a bobsled to hell. There are just so many puzzling moments and visual design choices; it’s always an engaging experience. The only thing I have to say falls a little flat for me personally is the sex scenes, because the whole S & M bit does nothing whatsoever for me, but that aside, it’s not a bad way to kill an hour of your time. And realistically, cute Japanese girls in varying stages of undress, how awful can it really be?

Check it out.

The trailer breaks me head a little. Did you actively go out and find this film? Might find a copy for Chris’ birthday :-)

Thanks for the review, it looks great on the frontpage next to Wallace & Gromit (tehehe).

Well, you may not want to hear this, but one of your ‘rivals’ for the podcast awards (Cinema Diabolica) have been talking this company up for awhile now. They and an affiliate show (they’re both hosted by the same website), The Gentlemen’s Guide To Midnite Cinema recently reviewed the first two releases from Pink Eiga quite favorably.

They sounded so insane, I had to drop the bucks for them when they released last month.
