Transformers Animated “ Optimus Prime
- Series: Transformers Animated
- Size class: Voyager
Vehicle Mode
Optimus Prime disguises himself as a futuristic, red & blue fire truck, with a detachable trailer assembly. With the rear assembly removed, this figure greatly resembles his original generation 1 counterpart. A sturdy & solid figure, the truck mode has 4 wheels which allow the figure to roll a reasonably good distance on a flat surface. The emergency assembly fits on to the back of the truck by tabbing into holes on the back of the cab. In this form, the water cannon can rotate 360 degrees, though it is at a diagonal angle, due to the shape of the main compartment.

Robot Mode
Optimus Prime’s robot mode is suitably beefy and toonish. He looks the part. A simple thing that I like about this mode is that there is something about it that when you look at it, you think ËœThat’s Optimus Prime’. He’s got the looks, he’s got the touch, he’s got the power, and his articulation is very impressive.
The head rotates 360 degrees. There is also a hinge on the back of the neck, which allows the face-plate to retract or extend. Any hardcore fanboys will no doubt weld the face-plate shut, but I personally do not have a problem with Prime having a mouth.
His shoulders can bend up and down at joints on the torso and the shoulders themselves, as well as rotating 360. the elbows can rotate 360 from the shoulder, and bend backwards and forwards. They can also bend inwards at the elbow, so his arms can be positioned so he can place his hands on his waist as a superhero look, or raise his fist in anger as if to say Get of my lawn, you little punks!
The waist rotates 360 degrees; though rotating it too much in one direction seems to tighten up the spin-conversion mechanism used for the transformation. The legs can bend backwards and forwards at the hip, as well as in and out, which makes for an impressive splits. His knees also bend backwards and forwards, as well as rotating 360. His feet can bend up and down, thanks to his transformation.
Altogether, Prime has superb proseability, and can assume countless positions, making him perfect for children who want action in their action figure, or collectors who want to display him in a cool pose.

Accessories
The fire-truck compartment for vehicle mode becomes 2 separate weapons for Prime. The water cannon becomes a hand gun, and the main compartment becomes a battle axe. The gun fits neatly into his hand, and manages to fit the overall feel of Prime’s aesthetics. An interesting feature is the fact that a hole can be opened on the underside of the gun, and can be filled with water. Then, by pumping the barrel, the gun becomes a functioning water pistol.
The Axe is somewhat less impressive. It differs greatly from the axe used in the cartoon series, and the fact that it becomes his trailer means that it is abnormally large. Putting the axe in Prime’s hand often results in his arm drooping due to the weight of it.
A different option for the axe, which I prefer when putting him on display, is to attach it as a backpack. By lifting up the lights on Prime’s back, the axe can be attached by a peg, and results in bat-like wings. This also allows the gun to be attached to his back, resulting in a jetpack of sorts. If you happen to have the Deluxe Cybertron mode Optimus Prime, or the Battle begins 2-pack Prime, you can replace the crazy-ass battle axe with a much more conservative, and show accurate one.

Final Verdict
Definitely get this figure if you like Transformers. He is a very impressive, highly articulated, and is so far my personal favourite figure in the animated line so far.

I love my Voyager class Prime.
For the record, i’m ok with face-plate down. One of the more appealing things to me about the animated series is that the character have human-ish faces and features… would have been unforgivable 20 years ago, but it kind of fits the new feel and tone of the Animated series. The Autobots are depicted more like Superheroes than alien robots. Love it.
Also recommend are Voyager class Bulkhead and Deluxe class Sentinel Prime.
