Just a little clarification guys. An R rated movie in America is 17+ but if your under 17 you can still get into the movie if you have someone 17 or older buy the ticket for you. NC-17 is No Children under 17. So you must be 17 or older to see the movie and you cannot buy a ticket for anyone under 17 it’s not allowed. They pretty much check IDs. But NC-17 movies are rarely ever shown in a theater. But it does happen sometimes.
Thanks for the clarification Trey.
For me Jin-Roh is one definately one of the most challenging films I’ve seen, partly because it is frankly brilliant, but also partly because my flatmate only introduced me to anime a few months ago when talking about movies one night I mentioned my opinion that anime was a kids medium, he sat me down in front of Jin-Roh about thirty seconds later and I had my narrow perceptions of the genre brutally beaten to a screaming pulp. I now own a copy and still get something new out of it every time I watch it. In exchange for this awesomeness I got him to watch The Wire – we’re even now.
Argh… punctuation, my only weakness. That and spelling. And bullets. And chocolate.
Irreversible. challenged me to not turn off the DVD. i could tell i was being challenged by that film. and i wasn’t too sure i liked it’s tone…
Agreed about Irreversible (I have Qdog’s copy in my DVD shelf). Thou it wasn’t the violence or anything in the film that challenged me, it was the stupid camera work. It was just painful to watch that camera bobing up and down like that from scene to scene.
Kudo’s to them for making one of the most explicit bashing scenes ever.
Also the rape scene is way too long.
Actually i disagree on one point. the Rape Scene is exactly the right length… for you to hate it and realize exactly how bad and unpleasant it is. it is the single really still shot in the film, and it goes on FOREVER. You hate it and it makes you uncomfortable to watch. As such i think it does precisely what it is intended to do.
that said. i’m happy to never watch the film again.
