Wow. Who OD’d on “Black Books” before doing the ‘cast? “Gimme the ting, wit’ the ting…” Funny though.
Solaris. Awesome. Both versions. I also caught the very 2001-like original, which is available on Netflix in the US (Region 1) and was quite good. I felt I was watching a classic piece of film when I watched it.
The great thing about Clooney’s Solaris is that it feels every bit a classic as did the original.
You nailed this film. It was an excellent piece of science fiction without degenerating into an action flick (not that there’s anything wrong with that) but it’s rare these days to get a true Science Fiction film, and this was certainly one.
I read the book as well, and both versions were solid adaptations, with Clooney’s version featuring a heart-wrenching twist on the background of the relationship between Kelvin and his wife.
I was wrapped up in each of these versions - the book, the 1972 film, the Clooney version. Each a classic in its own right.
I honestly expected a Hollywood movie when I saw Clooney’s version, and was treated to something far higher than my expectations of it. Sadly, due to my trepidation, I didn’t see it in the cinema, but later on DVD. My loss.
This was an excellent review choice. You’ve turned me on to several great films lately, including “The Descent”, “Dog Soldiers”, “Ichi the Killer”, “In the Pirkinning” and the TV series “Black Books”. Thanks. I have “Primer” on my Netflix queue now, and am simply waiting for it to arrive.
Keep up the cool shite.
Marlowe.
