Great to see your reviewing Cowboy Bebop. One of the best anime ever.

Can’t wait to hear what you have to say about it.

  2. avatar atomicgeek says:

Oooh, Bebop. You know, one of the things I always loved about that show was that regardless of how awesomely capable Spike seemed, he was actually absolute shit at bounty hunting! I could probably count on one hand how many times they brought in a bounty, collected the money, and weren’t run out on a rail for blowing everything up, and still have a finger left for salutin’ with. *grin*

I do wonder how painful Faye’s strap….er….things must have been. Every time she bent over I just went owwwwwww.

Are you looking just for TV themes, or movies as well? Bjork did a great version of “You Only Live Twice.”

  3. avatar Chris says:

Movies and TV themes, I think is the mandate. Q-Dog loves the mandate.

Guns & Roses do a great cover of Live and Let Die too.

Good point about Spike, atomicgeek! Perhaps those who project confidence are those who least possess ability?

When I die I want to be reincarnated as Faye’s strap.

  4. avatar atomicgeek says:

You could probably start a religion based entirely around being reincarnated as Faye’s strap. You still have, what, 66 years before it can happen, right? Get yourself some acolytes!

Yay, things are exploding right outside my window. In my foreign land, we celebrate our history by re-enacting it with rockets. Whee!

  5. avatar sysadmin says:

Thanks for the rdon chris! I’ll be lying awake in bed in a cold sweet thinking about that one tonight. Classic shite as usual.

  6. avatar sysadmin says:

I have to disagree about your comment that there is no “human interest” in Independance day. How about the old dude that flies the jet into the hear of the big saucer. There is plenty of “human interest”, but just like the rest of the movie it is shite.

  7. avatar Chris says:

Yeah, too much “human interest” tacked onto a film that was just overblown in every way, just like Q-dog would like to be.

Are these gay jokes getting tired yet?

  8. avatar sysadmin says:

Yep, got to agree with the “best TV theme music ever” moniker for Cowboys title music. Everytime I hear it come up in my playlist I just can’t stop tapping my foot. So much energy.

  9. avatar Q-Dog says:

yes the jokes are getting old… like you man. in fact if the jokes were receding as fast as your hairline… well we’d all be happy.

the movie themes are going nicely. i never really thought of the versions of bond themes. but there is a shitload of them around. good work.

Human interest in ID4 (its funny if you leave the shift key down you get ID$… theres something in that…) well, i wasn’t interested. but yeah we followed a bunch of characters. it was mostly human stories. there are very few movies with no human characters to pull you through. i imagine that those films would just never get anywhere. we need to identify with someone otherwise we switch off.

and thats why the ending of war of the worlds shits me so much. we identify with the characters. then we think one dies. we feel sad. then we are given the emotional finger when he comes back… it feels like a lie and the audience knows it.

back to the themes… i have no issue as to whether its movie or TV so long as the themes are different and cool.

    Q dog

thanks for another great podcast guys… War of the Worlds opens here on Friday… can’t wait…

Currently hunting down a copy of Cowboy Bebop after that sterling recommendation, I have watched Trigun but for some reason or another, never picked up cowbow so I’m looking forward to a hardcore anime marathon.

Speaking of scifi… pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez do a podcast on Farscape!

  11. avatar Bruce says:

Farscape is coming, once I watch enough to actually be able to do a cast on it. Chris has spent the $$ on the boxsets, now I need to work my way thought them. That being said, I am currently working thought Firefly, so expect to see that before farscape.

  12. avatar chewie says:

cool… firefly was great, can’t believe the bastidscancelled it… the movie Serenity looks fantastic though. Oh, and… yay!

  13. avatar Jaitu says:

Very cool show this week, Chaps.
Members of my sneakernet have voiced approval at the restraint shown in keeping on-topic.

My only experience of Cowboy Bebop is the movie which I thought was visually superb with a very cool and real world. I did doze off toward the end though. I hadn’t bothered going looking fo more as I was concerned it may go the way of the original Bubblegum Crisis which contrary to the ever improving arc of Bepop you describe seemed to just go flatter as it went on. After hearing your review I will definately pick up a complete set of the series.

  14. avatar Chris says:

Thanks J – glad to hear the sneakernet approves of our more focussed attempt at talking about stuff. I gotta admit, keeping our clothes on really makes a difference.

And yeah, Bebop the Series is a definate go-er. You won’t be dissappointed, trust us (moo-haha-haaaa!).

  15. avatar surepurpose says:

just checked out your podcast for the first time. What drew me in was that you guys were talking about Cowboy Bebop. You’ve already got me getting my dollars ready for the 5.1.

Anyway I didn’t hear you mention Samurai Champloo, which is Shichiro Watanabe’s new series. I highly recommend it. Right now only 3 DVDs are currently released, but you can get them off of bittorrent if you like. It’s currently airing on Cartoon Network here in the states. Its awesome, not as cool as Bebop, but amazing none the less. The story does not seem as compelling, but it’s completely different and you’ll notice a lot of Bebop style, IMO. It takes place in Edo era Japan, I think, and it follows two samurai and a girl. Don’t want to reveal too much, but one of the samurai is voiced by the same guy who voiced Spike Spiegal, thats the dub I’m talking about. I do recommend the subtitles, I don’t think the dubs are that great, but they aren’t the worst. going to go vote for you now, later.

  16. avatar Bruce says:

    They Surepurpose,

Thanks for listening and welcome to the blog. I personally don’t like dubs but the bebop one is an exception. I also get alittle pissed about the whole sub verses dub debate.. but I’ll leave that rant for later. Samurai Champloo is very cool and stylish. I haven’t seen all of it, but what I have seen (about 12 eps) I have really liked. I am amazed that no one has picked me up on not mentioning Excel Saga which is also his.

Anyway, keep listening and we will keep talking shite :-)
