Film News Roundup – October 2009 – Week 5

Is Pirates of the Caribbean 4 in trouble?
Bill Nighy says that any announcement about a sequel is premature. “I understand that there was an announcement that there was going to be a fourth, and now I’ve been told since that that was not a reliable announcement. I’m pretty sure that there will be [a fourth]. I would be amazed if there weren’t, given the success of the first three. I would love to be in it, because I had a wonderful time with those,” Nighy said. “They were great people, and those films are beloved, so it would be great to be in a fourth one.”

Adrian Askarieh Interview
What makes a good video game movie?
Our motto is: Does it make a good movie, is it a good idea? I’ve never made a video game deal or made a video game movie or developed a video game-based screenplay because it’s a video game. I’ve always done it because it’s a great idea for a movie. I think that’s what sets us apart, where some other people might say, “Hey, that’s a successful video game, let’s try and figure out a movie of it so they can make a couple of bucks.” We’ve never done that. The idea has to be there.

Shaun of the Dead guys take on UFO sci-fi
Star Nick Frost wouldn’t spill the specific locations the characters visit on their alien road trip, but assured fans that he and Pegg did research during their own real-life UFO tour. “I don’t want to say, because it would give away bits about the plot, but Simon and I did the road trip a couple of years ago,” Frost said. “In January we hired an RV, and we drove from L.A. for eight, nine days up through the American Midwest, ending up in Colorado.”

IS LEONARDO DICAPRIO THE THIRD MAN?
Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire might be starring in a remake of the classic Carol Reed film The Third Man, which is being written by Eastern Promises screenwriter Steven Knight. The package comes from Canal Plus and it’s going out for bidding, and the bidding is likely to be fierce. That’s a hell of a line-up, after all. And it’s before they have a director in place.

MRC Coins Next for District 9 Helmer
Media Rights Capital has committed to the next film by “District 9” writer/director Neill Blomkamp. The untitled science fiction pic will begin production by mid-2010. Bill Block will produce. MRC is giving Blomkamp creative freedom and a production commitment that isn’t contingent on domestic distribution. The director and Block will get an ownership stake in the finished product. Blomkamp will immediately start writing and preparing the visual effects. The film will be modest by sci-fi standards, but it will certainly cost more than “District 9,” the under-$30 million budget film that grossed more than $184 million worldwide.

Jackie Chan to Star in Shaolin Temple Remake
Jackie Chan will star in a $29 million Chinese-language remake of 1982′s The Shaolin Temple with Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse and Fan Bingbing. The film will be about China’s famed shrine of martial arts, a 1,500-year old temple whose famous fighting monks have featured in films by stars such as Bruce Lee and Jet Li, and in the 1970s TV series “Kung Fu” with David Carradine. The production, said to boast 1,000 real fighting monks and a grand scene in which the temple burns down, will start shooting later this year for release in late 2010.

James Bond 23 to Start Filming End of 2010
CommanderBond.net alerted us to a video in which Daniel Craig says that James Bond 23 will start filming at the end of 2010. The star was asked about the next film as he exited the stage door for “A Steady Rain,” a Broadway play he is currently performing in with Hugh Jackman. As you can see in the video below right before the one-minute mark, Craig says “We start at the end of next year.”

TASTE THE HAPPY! ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Creator Mitch Hurwitz Will Direct the Movie and Reveals a Few Details About the Plot!
Mitch Hurtiwz, Ron Howard, and Steve Zaillian sat down for a panel titled “The Art of Storytelling” moderated by producer Marcia Nasatir.  Austin Movie Blog [via The Playlist] reported two major piece of “Arrested Development” news which came out of this panel, the first bit of news: show creator and co-writer of the film Mitch Hurwitz would direct the movie. Prodded by Nasatir, Hurwitz revealed the first details of the story.  According to the article, Hurwitz had this to say: that there would be a heavy jail presence and then made jokes about the inclusion of TARP money, a nod to the inability of a film to be as timely as television due to lag times in production and release.

THE SLAMMIN’ SALMON IS COMING TO THEATERS!
Broken Lizard have finally locked a theatrical release schedule for their latest film. Directly from the lizard’s mouth: “THE SLAMMIN’ SALMON – DECEMBER 11! It’s official. Our new flick will be in theaters in Dec! Starting in select cities. We’ll tell you which ones as we get the info. Stay tuned!”

Did James Cameron Rip Off Poul Anderson’s Novella?
Call Me Joe, a novella written in 1957 by Golden Age science fiction writer Poul Anderson, centers on a paraplegic (like Avatar) — Ed Anglesey — who telepathically connects with an artificially created life form in order to explore a harsh planet (in this case, Jupiter). Anglesey, like Avatar’s Jake Sully, revels in the freedom and strength of his artificial created body, battles predators on the surface of Jupiter, and gradually goes native as he spends more time connected to his artificial body.

“Mad Max 4″ Aussie Shoot In 2010
It’s official, a fourth “Mad Max” begins pre-production next week and will be shot around the Australian state of New South Wales starting in August next year. Speaking at a press conference in Sydney on Saturday, director George Miller revealed that he’s “still in the middle of casting” and isn’t sure who’ll be involved as yet, putting doubt on some online rumors earlier that emerged this week about Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron scoring roles. Watch the video:

Damon, Brolin in ‘True Grit’ talks
Coen brothers also reach out to Jeff Bridges
Matt Damon is in discussions to star in Ethan and Joel Coen’s remake of “True Grit.” Josh Brolin, who starred in the brothers’ “No Country for Old Men,” is also in talks for a major role. Paramount Pictures and the Oscar-winning writer-director team are moving fast on their re-adaptation of the Charles Portis novel, first reaching out to Jeff Bridges, and now Damon and Brolin, to potentially star. Damon would take on the Glen Campbell role of a Texas Ranger tracking an outlaw along with a gruff U.S. marshal originally played by John Wayne, who won an Oscar for his role in the 1969 Western.

Nayan Padrai to helm ‘Harry’
Indie romantic comedy centers on Indian-American student
Nayan Padrai has an Indian story to tell, American-style. Padrai is directing the indie romantic comedy “When Harry Tries to Marry,” which he co-wrote with Ralph Stein. The story involves a rich, 22-year-old Indian-American college student who shocks his assimilated Indian family with his desire to skip the whole “love marriage” thing and opt for a traditional arranged one with an Indian girl instead. The situation becomes more complicated when his feelings for a longtime American friend deepen.

Noah Taylor, Paddy Considine and Sally Hawkins have joined the cast of “Submarine,” TV writer/director Richard Ayoade’s feature debut. The coming-of-age laffer, which is adapted from Joe Dunthorne’s novel of the same name, also features Craig Roberts and Yasmin Paige. Ayoade co-created and directed Channel 4′s spoof horror comedy skein “Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace,” in which he also appeared, and its sequel series “Man to Man With Dean Lerner.”
