Comic News Roundup – March 2010 – Week 2

More JSA on Smallville
At the Emerald City Comicon (in Seattle), Geoff Johns also confirmed that the JSA would appear again on Smallville toward the end of the season. “The hope is for every DC character to appear outside the comic book. Correctly,” Johns said.

Evan Rachel Wood’s out as Spider-Man’s Mary Jane. But who’s in?
That on-again, off-again Spider-Man Broadway musical originally meant to open Jan. 16, 2010? Now one of its intended stars is off the project, but even so, the creative team has publicly vowed to have the show up and running sometime this year. Evan Rachel Wood, who back in June was telling us that the production was going to be “a crazy rock ‘n’ roll circus show,” has dropped out of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

Battlestar’s ‘Boomer,’ more babes due on Human Target
“Just this litany of beautiful, talented women have come on the show,” Valley said. “Amy Acker is in the finale. She plays this really pivotal character in Chance’s life. Grace Park is in an episode called ‘Cornerman.’ Moon Bloodgood is showing up. Also Autumn Reeser comes back as well. She sort of has a recurring role on our show. She was in the show about the building that blew up, the kind of Die Hard-esque episode. She’s coming back to help us out.”

Mark Millar Talks Kick-Ass 2!
The writer discusses the future of Kick-Ass and Red Mist in the comic book and potential movie sequel…
“One of my favourite ideas in superhero comics is the exposure of the secret identity… I like the idea of doing that to somebody like Kick-Ass, who’s going to have real-world ramifications if his secret identity gets exposed. I wanted that in the first volume but there was just no room, so I shifted it all into the second volume.”

Sam Worthington Set To Star In Sci-fi Comedy Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future
Sam Worthington has signed on to another project: Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future, a British sci-fi comic property. Dan Dare has been around in comic strips since 1950; created by Frank Hampson, he’s also the most successful comic property in the history of the UK. He’s often described as the British Buck Rogers and is meant to look like the British Army type. He’s the “chief pilot of the Interplanet Space Fleet.”

Hugo Weaving in talks to play ‘Cap Am’ villain Red Skull
Marvel Studios has zeroed in on Hugo Weaving to play the villainous Red Skull in “Captain America.” In the Marvel comics, Red Skull has been Captain America’s archenemy since 1941, when he engaged in espionage and sabotage as Hitler’s right-hand man. In his final battle with the superhero, he was buried under the rubble of a bombed building but — as would occur later with Captain America — fell into a state of suspended animation. Both were revived in modern times.

Hellboy Is Conan the Barbarian’s Dad
Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, will replace Mickey Rourke as Corin, Conan’s father … and a single dad at that! Lionsgate begins shooting the remake of the 1982 classic Conan the Barbarian in Bulgaria later this month, with Marcus Nispel directing Hawaiian male model Jason Momoa in the title role.

Enter ‘Sandman’ For Neil Gaiman and Matthew Vaughn? ‘Kick-Ass’ Director Wants HBO-style Series
“I think it would make an amazing HBO series, you know, where you can just really create that world,” Vaughn said. “There’s too much to get into an hour and a half, two hours… [Neil and I] talked about it,” the “Kick-Ass” director said. “I think as a movie it’s virtually impossible to make properly.”

Michel Gondry doesn’t want to hear your Green Hornet complaints
“Let’s set the record straight,” Gondry said. “There is no comic book of the Green Hornet, so I don’t want people to tell me, ‘You didn’t respect the comic book,’ because I dare them to show me the comic book. I know that Kevin Smith did one lately. It’s probably great, but that’s his vision. There’s no right to claim Green Hornet is a comic-book figure. It’s a radio show to start with, and … a TV show from the ’60s, so that’s what there is. If people think we owe to follow the rule of a comic book, there is no comic book of The Green Hornet, so f–k that. I’m sorry, but I don’t owe anything to any aficionado of the comic book. I’m doing a film.”

13 killer spoilers, secrets and surprises from Kick-Ass
Remember the scene in Spider-Man where Peter Parker tests out his new powers on the rooftop? Kick-Ass tries it without the benefit of webbing and genetically enhanced strength. “Spider-Man  we tried to do shot by shot, but we couldn’t afford to put a crane up there,” Vaughn said during the panel. “Literally every scene we were taking things from movies we’d seen before. The Mist-mobile is literally from the Tim Burton Batman. The jetpack is actually meant to be the X-wing fighter shooting the Death Star.” Yes, that’s a Star Wars reference, too.

‘Green Lantern’ taps two Kiwi actors
Kiwi filmmaker-actor Taika Waititi, pictured, and Kiwi actor Temuera Morrison, best known as Jango Fett from the “Star Wars” movies, have joined the cast of Warner Bros. “Green Lantern.”

It’s on! Kirby estate sues Marvel; copyrights to Iron Man, Spider-Man at stake
The children of comic book icon Jack Kirby have officially sued Marvel to terminate copyrights and gain profits from such lucrative comic creations as Iron Man, X-Men, The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, follows the September move by the estate to send out 45 notices of termination to Marvel and owner the Walt Disney Co., as well as Sony, Universal, Fox and others, hoping to recapture control of much of Kirby’s work. In January, Marvel filed its own lawsuit, claiming the creations were “work-made-for-hire” and that Marvel was the real “author” of such works under the 1909 Copyright Act.

PRIEST On Set Video Features Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, and Stephen Moyer
First behind the scenes video and it features Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, and Stephen Moyer talking about the movie.  According to the announcer, the video was recorded on the final day of filming.  Also, if you look closely, you can see Maggie Q in costume standing next to Paul Bettany around the 30 second mark.  It also shows some of the wire work being done on the film.

Dana Valentine Comic book character is getting a Film Adaptation
The newly formed C2 Entertainment is going into production on a new comic book film adaptation called Dana Valentine: Brains, Beauty and Bullets. The comic property, written and illustrated by Daniel Cooney, has 12 issues and three trade paperback graphic novels; they are called  Fully Loaded, Red Rain and The Killing Moon. The story follows a female contract-killer named Dana Valentine, who has an addictive attraction to risk and violence in the deadly world of the killing game. It explores the dichotomy of a killer on the job and the mental after-effects of a woman who’s morally questionable profession has made her a liability to everyone she’s ever known, including herself.

The Losers: Andy Diggle Interview
Well the comic was commissioned as work-for-hire in the first place, so I never really “owned” it. So Jock and I never really had “control” in the first place. The comic was our baby, but there comes a point where your baby has to grow up and leave home and make its own way in the world. We still love it, but it’s bigger than us now. You have to let it go.

The Fine Print

This is by no means meant to be a comprehensive roundup of the entire weeks’ news. All stories are chosen by me for no other reason than that they got my attention and might capture yours. If something you think is more important chime in on the feedback; we’d love to hear comments and have a conversation about it.
