Comic News Roundup – December 2009 – Week 4

Robert Rodriguez: Don’t hold your breath for Sin City 2
Miller wrote a script for the proposed sequel in 2007. “We have to look at [Miller's script] now and go, ‘Is this really the one?’ I think it’s built up so much, like, are we really going to satisfy everybody with what we have, should we add to it? It’s the thing we’ve always talked about, but now, two years later, going on three, we’d probably make some adjustments, but nothing that would take a long time.”

Judd Winick To Write ‘Batman: Under The Hood’ Animated Movie?
With the release of “Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths” just over two months away, a report has hit the ‘Net that the next DC animated feature film will be an adaptation of “Batman: Under The Hood.” According to Mania.com, the film will be adapted by comic scribe Judd Winick who wrote the original storyline in the “Batman” comic book series with artists Doug Mahnke and Paul Lee. In “Under The Hood”, a figure from Batman’s past returns under the guise of the Red Hood to seek vengeance against both the Dark Knight and the Joker who — as long time comic readers may recall — was the first villain to use the Red Hood identity.

‘Hawkman’ Movie Takes Flight at Warner Brothers?
Described as “part Indiana Jones, part Da Vinci Code, and part Ghost”, exclusive sources at Pajiba report that Hawkman will be the next DC Comics character to get the big screen treatment from Warner Brothers. With Green Lantern shooting in 2010, are we starting to see Warners lay down the groundwork for an eventual Justice League film?

The secret origin of the black Spider-Man costume
In 1982, a 22-year-old fan came up with the idea of a Spider-Man in a black costume. Then-editor in chief Jim Shooter wrote him saying, “I want to buy it,” and paid the fan $220 for it. Black Spidey proved to be a sensation, paved the way for the creation of signature villain Venom, and was a key element of “Spider-Man 3.”

Kicking Ass with Millar
“The working title [for the sequel] is ‘Balls to the Wall,’ and we’re thinking about launching it round about San Diego time, right around August. But to avoid delays, we’d like to stockpile a few issues, I think. It seems crazy that it’s taken 22 months to do eight issues. But it’s been brilliant. The readers have been very loyal and stayed with it despite the delays. The sales have actually gone up every issue.”

Ambush boards superhero project Super with Kevin Bacon, Rainn Wilson
Miranda Bailey’s LA-based Ambush Entertainment has joined Ted Hope’s This Is That as producing partner on Super, which has just attached Kevin Bacon and is shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, through January. Bacon will play Jacques, a smooth-talking drug dealer who steals the wife of an average guy played by Wilson, causing the latter to become a one-man crime-fighting force known as The Crimson Bolt.

Who wants to be the new Josie and the Pussycats?
Dan DeCarlo’s fictional rock band will get new life (sort of) as actor/producer Nick Cannon and Atlantic Records search for three girls to resurrect Josie and the Pussycats. The worldwide quest will be the basis for a reality competition series and possibly a spin-off dramedy — both on Nickelodeon’s TeenNick channel, for which Cannon is chairman. No target date was given for the shows’ debut.

Sony Updates: SPIDER-MAN 4 Production NOT on Indefinite Hold
UPDATE: Sony has contacted us this morning and they are denying the story. The production is on their expected holiday hiatus, but will ramp up again early next year. Yes, the filmmakers are working on the script, but there is nothing unusual about that at all, productions always are working and tweaking scripts right up until principal photography begins and that is still a few months away.

John Cassaday Enters the “Dollhouse”
“Planetary” and “Astonishing X-Men” artist John Cassaday was given the invite to step behind the camera from his former “Astonishing” writer and “Dollhouse” creator Joss Whedon early in the show’s first season. “It was about the span of a year between him asking me to do it and actually getting the green light,” the artist told CBR. “The big stumbling block was [the series] just getting renewed. Once that happened, it was up to Joss to work his magic and get me through the right doors. I truly didn’t get too worked up over it until I was completely approved and given shooting dates. There was just too much that was out of my control, so I just let the hands of fate do that voodoo they do.”

‘Iron Man 2′ And Other Marvel Movies Are Successful Due To Comic Book Writers, Says Joe Quesada
“Matt Fraction is a perfect example,” he continued. “He got to sit down with Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige and discuss the new Iron Man movie. Being the current ‘Iron Man’ writer, Matt could offer a unique perspective on the character. Bendis is involved in the Marvel Creative Committee, as am I. I’m sure, from time to time, we’ll be bringing more creators in as projects call for them. More and more, the Marvel film world reaches out to the comics world, and now you’re starting to see that other studios and comic companies are taking note and are looking to copy that formula in some way.”

Bryan Singer reveals the story for his new X-Men
“This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where [their] relationship took a wrong turn. There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from X-Men will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain.”

Screen beauty Scarlett Johansson transfers to the dark side for superhero sequel
“What do I like about the [Black Widow]? Everything. Her fabulous outfit. Her wonderful hair. Everything. There’s nothing not to like about the character. She’s a total bad ass and I think it’s rare that we get to see this sort of super heroine brought to the screen and where they’re really kicking some major ass, which she does.”

James Cameron Says ‘There Are Too Many Superhero Movies Right Now’
“I feel there are too many superhero movies right now,” Cameron reasoned. “I think Hollywood’s in a bit of a rut. They’ve done the good ones and they’re starting to get down to the second and third tier of superheroes — the guys that would not be asked to speak at the annual superhero dinner.”

Frank Miller’s 300 sequel Xerxes to depict Battle of Marathon
Previous reports had indicated that the new graphic novel, which would be used as the basis for another movie, is set between the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Plataea, shown at the end of 300. However, according to the LA Times article, the follow-up is now titled Xerxes — Xerxes I of Persia is the antagonist of 300 — and takes place 10 years before Thermopylae. “It’s the Battle of Marathon through my lens,” Miller told the newspaper last week. “I’ve finished the plot and I’m getting started on the artwork.”

One Of These Five Lovely Ladies WILL Be Hal Jordan’s Girlfriend!
Not much has been heard about the film since they cast Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern and the production was pulled out of Australia. But there are five candidates for the role of CAROL FERRIS – Hal Jordan’s love interest in the film. Per the script, Carol Ferris (27) is the daughter of aerospace mogul Carl Ferris. She works for her dad’s company FERRIS AIR, got an MBA, and has a lifetime crush on Hal Jordan. According to sources, the five candidates are:
