Comic News Roundup – December 2009 – Week 2

Scarlett Fire lights up ‘The Hunter’
Dare Comics series headed to the bigscreen
Scarlet Fire Entertainment is launching development of a feature adaptation of Dare Comics’ series “The Hunter.” Dare launched the title, centered on a contemporary superhero set against the backdrop of organized crime, in 2007. First of four issues, with art by David Golding, focused on a CIA agent with extraordinary powers and the start of his investigation into four major terror attacks on America.

Jeremy Renner Talks Hawkeye!
“I haven’t heard anything since I talked to them three weeks ago,” he admitted. “The last I knew is that they still have to find their director for ‘The Avengers,’ that’s where he’s really going to show up. They were just talking, ‘Like maybe we should consider maybe hiring Hawkeye now’ but there’s no director on ‘Avengers’ so they don’t really want to force-feed the director, ‘Here’s the whole cast.’ It’s a big role so they didn’t want to do that to the director, so I think they might wait. I know they’re interested, I’m interested, so we’ll see if it works out.”

DEADPOOL COULD BE GOING TO ZOMBIELAND
While nothing is official just yet, it looks like Fox could  be hiring Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of Zombieland, to script the adventures of the Merc With A Mouth.

Spider-Man 4 Circling John Malkovich, Anne Hathaway
Currently, fans are trying to crack the mystery of Spider-Man 4’s bad guys; rumors and speculation had it that every actress in Hollywood was trying out for the sexy villainess Black Cat, or that Dylan Baker’s Curt Connors would finally get to transform into the Lizard in this installment. Now, though, Movieline has confirmed with sources close to the film that Raimi’s sequel is circling John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway to play Spider-Man’s adversaries, and neither evildoer is quite what you might have expected.

Trailer For ‘Grant Morrison’ Biopic Arrives Online
Titled “Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods,” the film is directed by Patrick Meaney, who’s been chronicling the “We3″ and “The Invisibles” writer’s life for quite a while now, and interviewing various personalities in and around the comics scene. Among the many notable comic creators that appear in the trailer are Jason Aaron (“Ghost Rider”), Matt Fraction (“Invincible Iron Man”), Geoff Johns (“Blackest Night”), and Mark Waid (“The Flash,” “Incorruptible”).

Ryan Reynolds On ‘Deadpool’ Writer Hunt And ‘Dream Director’ Quentin Tarantino
“You think directors for a movie like this and you immediately picture [Quentin] Tarantino or somebody like that,” Reynolds told MTV News. “Obviously Tarantino is a guy that likes to direct his own material, so there’s a good chance he wouldn’t be the guy. We all have our lists of dream directors.”

Matthew Vaughn on Kick-Ass
The Kick-Ass director on his adaptation of the popular comic book.
Nic is a big comic book fan, and he just read the script and went, “This is cool. I’m in.” Simple as that. You know, Nic wants to do good work, and he was very cool. Literally, we sent him the script and he read it and said, “I’m in.” So it was a very easy process.

George Clooney Explains Why ‘Batman & Robin’ Should’ve Won Him An Oscar
But, I mentioned to Clooney, not every film he’s made has been an awards contender. “Really,” he teased. “Do you think?” And then, hilariously, Clooney went to town. “You’re thinking ‘Batman & Robin,’” he grinned, faking outrage. “Is that what you’re talking about? Are you trying to bring that one out? There was a lot of Oscar buzz around ‘Batman & Robin’,” he insisted. “There was a ‘Best Codpiece’ award. And then they took that out, and I had no shot.”

Leonardo DiCaprio Joins Cast Of Animated Superhero Movie ‘The Guardians’
According to Dreamworks, DiCaprio is set to lend his voice talent to “The Guardians,” a new animated project from DreamWorks Animation. DiCaprio will play the legendary Jack Frost, who bands together with a group of other famous storybook heroes to fight an evil spirit named Pitch. The group of heroes in “The Guardians” consists of the aforementioned Jack Frost, as well as Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and the Sandman. But beyond their status as folklore icons, the Guardians are also “a band of superheroes, who possess their own special powers.”

Sword & Sorcery Movies Update
IGN swings its savage sword at Conan, Kull and more.
Paradox Entertainment develops and licenses mainly character-based properties, including the stories and characters of the late author Robert E. Howard. Their next movie will be Conan the Barbarian, which has been in full casting mode for the last month. We were told that rumors that Conan will be a teen for most of the story are untrue. No final casting decisions have been made or announced yet. Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th, Pathfinder) directs.

‘Hancock 2′ Stalled By Scheduling Issues, Says Director
“There are so many people involved in that, from Will to his partner James Lassiter to Akiva [Goldsman] to Michael Mann, myself and to get us all in the same room just like this where we can all talk and then agree on anything, you’ve never met a group of people that have a harder time agreeing on anything,” director Peter Berg continued. “It’s like the Israeli peace process times a thousand how tough it is to resolve.”

Chris Noth brings a “good” Lex Luthor to ‘Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths’
I was extremely excited to be playing the ultimate villain from my youth. I remember how Gene Hackman portayed Lex Luthor with such great delight in the films, and I thought I’d be getting that Lex. So I was surprised to see that in this script, Lex is actually on the right side of the law. It required a whole new thinking on my part on how to approach him. I mean, he’s a super hero who’s in this very complex, parallel universe. He’s actually trying to save all of reality from being destroyed. So I just took that adjustment and said, “Wow, I need to get up to date on my super heroes.” I’m guess I’m a little bit retro. (he laughs)

‘Piper’ comic book being adapted into film
Project to take a dark look at Pied Piper of Hamelin fable
Persistent Entertainment, Pantry Films and Zenescope Entertainment are teaming up to produce an adaptation of Zenescope’s comic “The Piper.” “Piper” aims to take a dark look at the Pied Piper of Hamelin fable. The story will center on a much-bullied high school band student who unintentionally channels the spirit of the mysterious Pied Piper and triggers terrifying consequences of his actions beyond his control.

Marvel & Disney Set Merger Date
Since the early news was only of an intent to buy, fans have been waiting to see how the Marvel/Disney deal will affect their favorite hobby if at all. Today Marvel announced that the last step in making the merger official has been set as December 31st. On that day at 9:00 am EST, Marvel stockholders will meet to vote on the deal which will net them a share of the $4 billion Disney put up for the company in synch with the amount of shares they own in Marvel Entertainment.

Summit takes on ‘Alibi’
Mandeville to produce comicbook adaptation
Summit Entertainment, fresh off the success of “New Moon,” has come onboard a feature version of Top Cow’s comicbook “Alibi,” with Mandeville toppers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman producing. Comicbook, published last year, centers on a well-known socialite whose public presence establishes a perfect alibi for the covert activity of his secret twin brother, a government assassin. Mandeville snapped up rights to the project shortly after Comic-Con (Daily Variety, Aug. 4).
