Comic News Roundup – December 2009 – Week 1

Screenwriters J. Michael Straczynski and Matthew Sand on BROTHERS IN ARMS, FORBIDDEN PLANET, SHATTERED UNION, RED STAR, SILVER SURFER, WWZ, and LENSMEN
What happened was when FF2 didn’t do as well as they hoped it would do, it caused them to call into question a Silver Surfer movie. The script that I wrote picked up right where FF2 left off. So if they do a Silver Surfer film down the road, it’ll have to be its own separate things.

Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Stargirl oh my!
Entertainment Weekly has posted pictures for the upcoming “Absolute Justice” episodes in Smallville showing Hawkman (Michael Shanks), Dr. Fate (Brent Stait), and Stargirl (Britt Irvin).

Spectre to back up Crisis on Two Earths
According to a release sent from Warner Home Video, in the upcoming DVD Crisis of Two Earths, the main animated feature will be joined by a second animated short, starring the Spectre. Gary Cole from Entourage and Alyssa Milano from Charmed will be voice acting, while the short itself was written by 30 Days of Night creator Steve Niles.

Does Marvel Have Their Sights Set on Jeremy Renner for Hawkeye in THE AVENGERS?
“Hawkeye could be interesting. They’re going to send me some stuff on it, see what it is. But I think they’re pretty awesome, trying to make superhero movies almost plausible and not just some fantasy thing.”

Superman movie franchise reportedly on hold until legal dramas end
Anne Thompson reports that the studio is waiting to resolve its dispute with the heirs of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, who in 2008 reclaimed part of the copyright to the superhero, and the estate of Joe Shuster, which in 2013 will become eligible for its share.

IS DON BLAKE IN THOR OR NOT?
The movie opens with Thor in Asgard, and has been cast out of his home following some evil machinations. When he lands in a desert on Earth he meets Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster and her Norwegian professor, played by Stellan Skarsgard.

First Official Image and Synopsis for JONAH HEX Starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox
Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) is a scarred drifter and bounty hunter of last resort, a tough and stoic gunslinger who can track down anyone…and anything. Having survived death, Jonah’s violent history is steeped in myth and legend, and has left him with one foot in the natural world and one on the “other side.” His only human connection is with Leila (Megan Fox), whose life in a brothel has left her with scars of her own.

‘Smallville’ Producer On ‘Justice League’ And Season 10, Brian Austin Green To Return As Metallo
“I would say we will see members of the future Justice League who we haven’t seen in a while,” said producer Brian Peterson. “They will appear in [the Justice Society episode] and in the back section of the season. I can’t confirm who you will see, a lot of it is cast dependent. But we do have plans to have a few more members of the future JLA back on the show.”

Joe Quesada Says ‘Thor’ Movie Will Redefine The Superhero Genre
“If you’re a comics fan, you’ll have a preconceived notion of what you’re going to get. If you’re a non-comics fan, you’ll have another notion of what the movie is all about. And what’s really amazing is that both groups will walk away going, “I’ve never seen anything like this before within the super hero genre.” It’s so cool, and I don’t want to use the word unusual, but it is unusual in the sense that it redefines what a super hero movie can be. It’s not the expected story or settings. That part of it is incredibly exciting to me.”

Ryan Reynolds Says ‘Green Lantern’ Won’t Be A ‘Labored Origin Story’
“It is [an origin story] to a certain degree, but it’s not a labored origin story, where the movie [truly] begins in the third act,” he explained. “The movie starts when it starts. We find out Hal is the guy fairly early on, and the adventure begins.”

‘The Losers’ Movie Update: New Photos And Jeffrey Dean Morgan Interview Hit The ‘Net
“I’ve been hurt since Day One,” said Morgan of the bruising (literally) experience of playing Clay, the leader of the left-for-dead special ops team out to find the agent who wronged them. “I’m getting a little old for bouncing off the pavement. Some stuff is hard when you’re forty — but there’s nothing that I can’t recover from.”

Nic Cage Uncertain About ‘Ghost Rider 2′ Involvement
Cage said he hadn’t heard anything about Goyer’s sequel — which is set 10 years after the first film — and is afraid to comment on his future with the character these days. “Yeah, well I don’t really know how to answer that,” Cage said when I asked if he was still attached. “Because I don’t have all the details. I have to be careful about how I answer these questions about ‘Ghost Rider’,” he explained. “Because if I say anything, it seems to set the Internet ablaze.”

‘Spider-Man 4′ Without Tobey Maguire? Franchise Star Explains Why He Almost Didn’t Return
“It’s not that I was reluctant,” he said. “For me, it’s a big process to decide whether or not to do a role. … I have to wake up in the morning and feel like I can’t wait to get to work. I’ve got to feel OK about leaving my kids for 12 or 13 hours a day for five months. It’s a big commitment. Hopefully I’ll be able to evolve the character in a new direction,” he said. “He’ll still be Peter Parker, but I hope I can move him forward a bit and take him to a place where there will be new challenges for me as an actor.”

Eric Powell Breaks Silence on “The Goon”
“I just finished writing the script a few months back, and Blur is working on a lot of test stuff. Fincher is working on a film right now, so we’re waiting for him to get some space so we can start showing some of this stuff off. I’m pretty happy with everything so far. We’ve just got to work to get to the next point. This is a slow, long process.”

Sam Rockwell Compares ‘Iron Man 2′ To ‘Frost/Nixon’ And ‘The Green Mile’
“On ‘Frost/Nixon’ or ‘Green Mile,’ we all felt like, ‘This is a big deal!’ On ‘Iron Man [2],’ it did feel like a big deal at first, but we got very comfortable very quickly,” Rockwell told MTV News. “Maybe because I knew Jon Favreau and we had done ‘Made,’ which was a smaller movie, and Justin Theroux was writing it, who’s a friend of mine, there was a lot of improvisation. It was a very loose environment.”
