Comic Film/TV/Stage Roundup – July 2009 – Week 3

A Superman Cameo In Green Lantern Movie? Marc Guggenheim Weighs In On Rumor
Honestly, it changes on a daily basis. Whatever information I gave you today would be obsolete in a week, and maybe come back again in two weeks, said Guggenheim. And even if it wasn’t in flux at the script stage, it would still be constantly in flux because you can film it, put it in the original cut, and eventually it could end up on the editing room floor.

Natalie Portman joins Marvel’s ‘Thor’
Chris Hemsworth stars as Norse god of thunder
Portman will play Jane Foster, who in early comic book lore was a nurse who became Thor’s first love. The studio said the character will be updated for the feature adaptation, with Foster being a doctor-scientist type. Chris Hemsworth is already cast as Thor. Tom Hiddleston is Loki, the god of mischief who serves as the movie’s villain. Kenneth Branagh is directing.

‘Watchmen’ Star Jackie Earle Haley Has ‘Nerdgasm’ Talking ‘Human Target’ ‘Star Trek’ & Comic-Con
In working on ‘Watchmen’ I feel like I’m starting to understand that Comic-Con world, Haley told MTV News. “The way people get into movies and television shows it’s just awesome. I recently saw ‘Star Trek,’ and I had a nerdgasm watching it. It was just so cool.”

Exclusive: Cameron Diaz in talks for ‘Green Hornet’
Cameron Diaz is considering an offer to play the female lead in Green Hornet, opposite Seth Rogen. A deal hasn’t been sealed yet, but sources tell EW that she is in early talks for the role. Her reps at CAA declined comment. Michel Gondry is set to direct the film based on a script by Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg. Shooting is supposed to begin shortly, with a release date already set for July 9, 2010.

THE LOSERS MOVIE UPDATE
Original Comic series artist Talks about the film and shows his sketches for a one-sheet
THE LOSERS starts shooting in two weeks time, in Puerto Rico. The cast is set, the locations scouted and the wardrobe fitting is next week. Will Jensen be wearing his Lennon glasses? Will Cougar have the same style cowboy hat? We shall see¦ Up until yesterday, I’ve not allowed myself to actually think it was happening, as it’s been well over 3 years since we first met Pete Berg and things started moving. Three (maybe four) directors along the way, hearing it had stalled a number of times, we thought it was unlikely it’d see the light of day.

‘Losers’ adds Holt McCallany
Actor joins cast of DC Comics adaptation
Veteran actor Holt McCallany has signed on to “The Losers,” which is adapted from the well-known DC Comics/Vertigo property. The contemporary-set tale revolves around a group of Black Ops forces who, after being betrayed by their handler, regroup to seek revenge and conduct operations against the CIA. McCallany (“Fight Club”) will play Wade, a special-forces officer who has left the group. Zoe Saldana and Jason Patric already have been cast.

G.I. Joe Pulls a Stunt at the Jersey Shore
I was sitting on the beach in Ocean Grove, NJ yesterday when a Black helicopter stopped to hover just off shore about 35 feet in the air¦ as it slowly approached shore, a rope ladder rolled out and what appeared to be a diver climbed to the bottom of the rope ladder. The gleaming black helicopter turned only to reveal the G.I. Joe Movie logo as the diver began to wave. The helicopter the proceeded to hover south down the shore with the diver hanging on just over the water for as far south as we could see.

Scribe tapped for ‘Spider-Man 4′
Gary Ross will draft rewrite on Columbia film
Gary Ross has been brought on board to do a rewrite on Columbia’s “Spider-Man 4.” Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are back as director and star, respectively, as are series producers Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad. Ross now joins James Vanderbilt (“Zodiac”) and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire on the list of high-profile writers who have been working on the project.

Ryan Reynolds cast in ‘Green Lantern’
Actor beat out Cooper, Timberlake for coveted role
After an intense months-long search, Warner Bros. has settled on Ryan Reynolds as its choice to play Green Lantern, the studio’s live-action tentpole based on the DC Comics hero. Reynolds and his camp entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests, along with actors Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test.

Tennant enrolls at ‘St. Trinian’s II’
Cast includes Rupert Everett, Colin Firth
David Tennant, the star of BBC sci-fi series “Doctor Who,” and Sarah Harding, a singer with band Girls Aloud, have joined the cast of comedy “St. Trinian’s II: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold. The cast also includes Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley, Jodie Whittaker, Juno Temple, Tamsin Egerton, Celia Imrie and Fenella Woolgar, all of whom appeared in the first pic in the contemporary franchise, “St Trinian’s.” The pupils and staff of the anarchic girls’ school engage in a hunt for treasure and a battle against a women-hating secret society. The pics are based on Ronald Searle’s drawings, “The Girls of St Trinian’s”.

Warner Bros. wins ‘Superman’ case
Siegel heirs can only pursue DC Comics profits
In a decision announced Wednesday, U.S. Judge District Court Judge Stephen G. Larson found that the license fees the studio paid to corporate sibling DC Comics didn’t represent “sweetheart” deals as they weren’t below fair market value. That means the heirs will be able seek profits only from DC Comics — which earned $13.6 million from Warner Bros. for the 2006 release of “Superman Returns” — rather than from Warner Bros. as well.

Producer Eli Roth teases RZA’s kung-fu Iron Fist movie
“We’re just getting the script right,” Roth said. “I’m just sitting down with him, but Quentin has been mentoring RZA for years, and he’s ready to do it, and he’s directed music videos. He knows kung-fu movies the way Quentin knows kung fu and like the way I know horror movies; he’s seen everything. He’s got this whole movie figured out,” Roth said. “But it’s his own universe, his own world. It’s got hip-hop mixed in with kung fu; it’s got a multiracial cast; he’s got people lined up and all of these martial-arts stars and choreographers he’s already talked to about it. It’s really going to be spectacular.”
