Comic Film/TV/Stage – Roundup – June 2009 – Week 1

Breaking: Ryan Reynolds ‘actively’ working on ‘Deadpool’ spinoff
‘Proposal’ star says no villain yet and character will remain disfigured
“We’re just trying to break a story right now and figure out who the villain is going to be and all that stuff. But, it’s going to be just like the comic books. I’m gonna have a messed up face and you may see some flashbacks of Wade earlier in his life, but primarily what you see is what you get in the comics and that’s the goal. And there is no better place to draw material from then the comics which are incredible.”

Open auditions 05/27/09 for Spider-Man on Broadway
Andrew Lloyd Webber can’t believe he missed this one
the casting team has now decided that the best way to find their Peter Parker, MJ, and the not-particularly-Spidey-like new villain Arachne is with an open casting call. The casting notice states that “Spider-Man is looking for performers with dynamic rock/pop voices, including those with experience in bands and as solo performers.”

Bryan Singer Fancies Another Go At The X-Men And Superman
“The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto’s history in the concentration camp, then I’ve lived in that world. Apt Pupil, X-Men and now Valkyrie… I’ve lived in that Nazi universe for quite a while. I just might need to take a little break before I do something like that.”

WB nabs ‘Hench’ for McBride
Studio acquires graphic novel
Warner Bros. has acquired “Hench” and will develop the AIT/Planet Lar graphic novel as the template for a comic screen vehicle for Danny McBride, who is set to write the script with Shawn Harwell. McBride will play a football player who suffers a career-ending injury and needs a job. He signs on as henchman to a successful villain.

B. Clay Moore Says ‘There’s Some Momentum’ Behind ‘Hawaiian Dick’ Movie
“Well, there is a script out there, written by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon (‘Freddy vs. Jason,’ ‘Friday the 13th’). New Line has the script, but it was a sort of action-fueled take on the first Hawaiian Dick mini-series,” explained Moore. “It manages to capture most of the essence of the book (and of Byrd, the lead character), but adds enough punch to keep a larger audience happy. That works fine for me.”

See Ryan Reynolds As Captain Excellent in Paper Man
Michelle and Kieran Mulroney’s Paper Man will be receiving the opening night Gala screening of the LA Film Festival. In the picture you can see Ryan Reynolds as Captain Excellent, alonsgide Jeff Daniels as Richard Dunn, the writer who created him.

Spielberg’s ‘Tintin’ sets a date
‘Adventures’ to hit theaters in December 2011
Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment unveiled plans to release the motion capture pic Stateside on Dec. 23, 2011. But in an unusual move, film will launch internationally in late October and early November 2011. Also revealed: they will release “Tintin” in 3-D. Insiders said the dailies convinced them that 3-D would offer the best rendition.

EXCL-Thor Writer Ashley Miller
“Walt Simonson’s take on the character greatly informs what we brought to the script although I wouldn’t say we went to a specific story from his tenure on the book. We saw part of our job as taking all the many approaches to the character over the years (including the myths) and distilling them down into a form that worked for a two-hour movie. There’s a tremendous amount of ground to cover, so inspiration has to come from everywhere.”

Joshua Williamson’s Comics, TV & Film
His “Dear Dracula” has been otioned and “Necessary Evil” is already in development with Cartoon Network
At the end of January, Cartoon Network announced they were developing Williamson’s “Necessary Evil” as part of the network’s new live-action TV initiative. The comic book tells the story of two brothers, the sons of the world’s greatest supervillainess. After the boys’ mother is killed by a superhero the brothers are enrolled in the Necessary Evil Academy – a school for supervillains.

Exclusive: Jon Favreau On Iron Man 2
And Mickey Rourke on Whiplash
Mickey Rourke: “I’m having the time of my life!” he enthused about joining the Iron Man franchise. “It’s been really brutal, because my Iron Man suit weighs 23lb. It’s sort of a half-suit, with half my skin showing, with lots of Russian tattoos, because [Whiplash is just] out of a Russian-zone prison.”

The Fine Print

This is by no means meant to be a comprehensive roundup of the entire weeks’ news. All stories are chosen by me for no other reason than that they got my attention and might capture yours. If something you think is more important chime in on the feedback; we’d love to hear comments and have a conversation about it.
