E-3 Nintendo Wrap-Up

We’ve done Microsoft, we’ve done Sony…now it’s Nintendo’s turn for some E3 glory. Has Nintendo rested on its laurels, or will they have some great stuff in store to compete with the Microsoft Project Natal or the Sony PlayStation motion controller?

  • New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii kicks off the keynote, and looks COOL! Four player multiplayer is injected to the old-school Mario style most grew up with on the original NES console. Single player is also available, and controls match the common wiggle-waggle of Wii games. Look for it around Christmas time.
  • Wii Plus Fit is introduced next, and takes the popular game/exercise program to another level with a counter of calories burned in-session, new games, and new activities. Look for it in Fall 2009.
  • The Wii’s answer to 1:1 motion control, Motion Plus, is again shown and is demonstrated using Wii Sports Resort. Not really new news here, but it’s still neat. Wii Sports Resort arrives on June 26 and features new events like kayaking and archery.
  • Also for use with Motion Plus: Tiger Woods ‘10 and Red Steel 2. Same release period as Resort.
  • Nintendo has more RPGs than you can shake a stick at: Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (aka Mario and Luigi RPG 3), and Golden Sun DS are all paraded out. The Mario and Luigi game looks kinda cool, and takes place INSIDE Bowser’s belly. Cute.
  • More DS content: Women’s Murder Club (with a tagline of “Why join a book club when you can join the Women’s Murder Club” – maybe people don’t feel like killing and would prefer a good book instead, I dunno?) Style Savvy, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again, WarioWare: DIY and Cop: The Recruit are shown. Cop looks like a free-world RE4 clone. Kind of cool.
  • In other DS news – photos will now be able to be taken and uploaded straight to Facebook from your DSi.
  • The Wii Vitality Sensor is introduced. If you ever wanted to pretend you were a patient at the hospital from the comfort of your own living room, now you can! You stick your finger in a sensor and it monitors your heartbeat. Okay…
  • After nearly falling asleep, the Vitality Sensor might get a workout after Super Mario Galaxy 2 is revealed. The excitement is MOSTLY over the fact that Yoshi is back in the series. Kick-ass!
  • Two new third-party titles are shown off: The Conduit, a decent looking FPS, and Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles and Dead Space: Extraction, both on-rails shooters.
  • Last but not least, the best thing of the Nintendo keynote by far: Metroid: Other M. An action game by Nintendo and Team Ninja. Not an FPS. Pure gold. I want more information on this, Nintendo!

The vitality sensor might be able to tell you that I can’t garner up enough energy after Nintendo’s offerings to even make a decent joke OR some closing thoughts. See what I said about Sony’s…and times that by about twelve. Better luck next year, Nintendo – it’ll be interesting to see what happens to your market share now that you’re not the only ones with wiggle-waggle tech.
Will Mario be enough to keep Nintendo in the top spot, sales-wise? You tell us!

  1. All I can really say is Nintendo revealed 3 games that I am wanting to buy on release day for the wii…that is much better than last year but really that is all I can say.

I am skeptical of Other M until I see more than just cut scenes and fight sequences…I am looking for come good exploration somewhere in there.
