Marvel Resurrects it’s future in 2009/2099

In an interesting if somewhat bizarre move, Marvel have looked back to the future for a new series of comics coming in April. Timestorm 2009/2099 is a four issue limited series which sees Brian Reed and artist Eric Battle take us back to the dystopian cyberpunk world which was created in 1992 by artist Rick Leonardi and well known “Hulk” scribe Peter David.

In this future timeline the world is run by global mega corporations, and the heroes of today (Spiderman, Captain America, Iron man etc.) all disappeared sometime early in the 21st century. As such the re-emergence of costumed superheroes comes as shock to the population and they are hunted down as criminals. You’re probably wondering why we’re reporting on this at all, but to anyone who knows me or knows of my history of comic book buying, the answer is simple. “2099 is coming back?! HOLY CRAPSTICKLES I”M THERE!!!!”

spider-man-2099The very first comic book i ever bought from a bona fide comic book store was Spiderman 2099 issue 1. I had no idea where to jump into all these other series’ with years of continuity and here was a cool looking spiderman dude with whome i could get on board right at the very start. It didn’t hurt that it had cool red foil on the cover (thank you early 90’s gimmick covers!) and looked totally kickass. The art inside was bizarre but the writing and the style of storytelling hooked me straight out. Peter David i later came to realise was an old school comic writer who really knew his stuff having written for the Incredible Hulk for years.

Issue after issue i got hooked further and further and then the clever little marvel folks added new characters. about 3 issues in came the first ad for a spinoff series. Or an extension of the world if you will. And in these days of Pre-Internet the only news you heard about was what was in the previews catalogue or what as advertised in the letters section. As such i had to go out and buy Ravage 2099. And not long after that Doom 2099, X-men 2099 and a very different take on Ghost Rider 2099.

x-men-2099Later on in the run we were introduced to HULK 2099, a monstrous gamma irradiated beast who seemed to have more in common with Dale Keown’s “Pitt” than the un-jolly green giant. A version of the fantastic 4 (2099) showed up, but unlike almost every other character in the 2099 universe they were claiming to be the originals! Of course it wasn’t all modern day rehashes either, new characters such as the bad guy Thanatos, The Specialist, Halloween Jack, and a whole new roster of X-Men made the world seem more than just history repeating itself.

After a couple of years of the series things eventually went down the gurgler and all the books lost their writers and artists in one big hit. Storylines got dropped like so much dirty laundry and the entire world got complressed into a single monthly title. 2099 AD came to a fairly unimpressive ending despite the epic nature of the storyline. Atlantis attacks floods the world and the meager few survivors try to get off planet. Most definitely ending with a whimper… a most undignified close.

cerebra-2099Certain characters continued to float around the Marvel universe including the one true light of the whole series Spiderman 2099. He has hung out with the “Exiles” had run in’s with future Hulks and generally looked cool. and now finally we return to the world of 2099 for real!

I have no idea on how it will work, or where it will fit, but “Miguel O Hara”… well he was, to paraphrase David Tennant “My Spiderman.” He was cyberpunk, he introduced the world to organic web shooters, and no matter what, his costume looked SO cool. So i say welcome back to the world of tomorrow and “Holy Shock” her we go again!

The only really scary thing… its release date is April 1…. DEAR GOD MARVEL DO NOT LET THIS BE A JOKE!!!!!
