Death at a Funeral US Remake – Movie Trailer

Death at a Funeral US Remake – Movie Trailer

The world has officially gone mad. It may not look like it if you just poke your head out the window. In fact it may look like every other day that has come before it, but realise that somewhere deep in the collective psyche of the planet one little bolt has sheared off and something much bigger has snapped, which has lead to something else breaking, which has in turn lead to some moron somewhere in America thinking that it was a fine and dandy idea to remake a film less than 2 years after it’s initial release in the SAME LANGUAGE.

A while back we reviewed a lovely little British comedy about death, life, midgets, families and what happens when you take the wrong drugs at the wrong time (Check it out here). It was a well made film, it had a good cast and made sense to people on both sides of the big pond, as it’s humor was “universal.”  Now some douchebag has decided that it needed to be remade in Americanese with an almost entirely black cast.  I have no complaints that the casting has become so afro american-centric. I want to make that abundantly clear.  My problem is that they are remaking this at all.  Oh and that it has Martin Lawrence in it.  That guy is a charisma black hole.

I mean for crying out fucking loud, the original was directed by Frank Oz!  He’s American!!!!!  And this one is directed by Neil LaBute, the magnificent ASSHOLE responsible for remaking the Wicker Man!  My soul cries!  While it does, just go and watch the trailer…

See what i mean? ? Will James Marsden save the day on this one?  Isn’t that the same midget they got in the UK film? Why would you remake something in the same language while the DVD has still not yet gone to weekly?  Feedback and let us know!

Umm, it translates well because it isn't culture dependent. A funeral, relations and things going wrong. The only places this wouldn't translate well is non-christian funerals.

Well I unfortunately foresee this actually being some what of a hit. The script seems very similar to the original if the trailer is to go by. It has all the names it needs to pull an audience in USA. The biggest problem with the trailer is that it gives away to punchline of the whole film. While I think it is stupid to remake the film, I can also see why they are doing it. It would have been a fairly cheap licence and lets face it, it translates well.

your last sentence is what shits me the most though… it doesn't need to translate well. its the same language. I can see that getting the license wouldn't have been that hard… but my guess is that its because the brits were just wondering: Why do you want it?

i just hope that maybe someone will do the saem thin with Transformers 2, remake it in 2 years time, though this time in NOT SHIT.

sorry its not your last sentence that shits me… its the concept.

Are audiences too dumb to be able to adapt a set of experiences to themselves? Do we have to be shown characters that we immediately relate to (be it black, white, english speaking, american etc.) before we can apply the story to ourselves and relate to it? Surely a black american audience should be able to watch a film featuring white british people and still be able to laugh at it, because the situation itself is what is universal. The themes are universal as you essentially said.

    i am frustrated by it.
