Planet Hulk – Movie Trailer

In 2006, Marvel Comics put out a crossover storyline called Planet Hulk, wherein the Illuminati (a secret cabal of superheroes consisting of Professor X, Doctor Strange, Mister Fantastic, Namor, Iron Man, and Black Bolt) decide that the Hulk poses too great a threat to the Earth and through subterfuge, shoot him out in to space to an uninhabited planetoid. Things go awry, as they do, and instead the Hulk’s shuttle crash-lands on the planet Sakaar, by turns a technological marvel and a backwards alien Roman Empire. Hulk becomes a gladiator and, in the mode of Russell Crowe, works his way up to emperor. Imagine Conan had a kid with an Orion slave girl and you get close to the look of Dr. Banner’s emerald off-sider.

Marvel debuted its trailer for the animated straight-to-DVD film at San Diego Comic Con 2009. The film should be coming out on DVD and Blu-Ray in February 2010. By the looks of the trailer, the story hews closely to that of the comics. I can only hope that compressing the sprawling, yearlong storyline into 120 minutes or less will help speed up the action and increase the drama. The animation is serviceable, but not quite to the standards set by Marvel’s previous offerings of Doctor Strange or Hulk Vs.
