District 9 – Full trailer

Neill Blomkamp’s name is not particularly well known in terms of international directors, this is going to change very soon however. His work in partnership with New Zealands best loved hobbit: Peter Jackson will soon thrust him into the limelight as one of the most innovative and exciting directors we’ve seen in the last decade.

HALO fans will recognize Neill’s name from the “Landfall” series of commercials that he directed in the lead up to the release of Halo 3. They featured his trademark style of combination of handheld camera and cinema verite, with some occasional use of security cameras and other devices. They also featured a lifesize Warthog built by WETA workshop. Yeah we all lost it over that.

District 9 is Neill’s first feature length film, following on from a series of shorts and commercials, many of which featured visually striking CGI imagery. (His Citroen commercial made transformers fans drool long before Michael Bay did his thing.) It seems like it will take the best elements of Neill’s Halo work, and tie it in to a story which echoes many themes of his South African heritage. Beyond all that it looks HARDCORE!!!!

It was unclear from the first trailer what sort of film this was shaping up to be, but now its becoming pretty clear that this is going to be an ass kicking action film to keep an eye on.

What do you think? Should they have stuck with Halo and given this the boot or is this the shiznit?

That trailer tells much more about the story than the last one I saw did. I hope the movie fulfills the promise of the trailers, because it looks like it could be really good!

I Just love the feeling of reality about it. it feels so dirty and dusty but yet totally real. so when the big sci-fi guns come out it just seems so much more bizarre and awesome. Add to that i know Jo-Burg and it all has this funny feeling of a documentary of things that haven’t happened.

      Cannot wait!

Wow, I’m liking where this is going. Does remind me of a video game (not in a bad way).
