Daybreakers – The Spierig Brothers Interview
2003 saw the release of an independent horror film set in rural Queensland, detailing the outbreak of a zombie infestation. The film was called Undead and was the brainchild of two young filmmakers who had financed the entire effort off their own bats. These Spierig Brothers had not only shot and edited the film, but also done the surprisingly complex special effects and CGI work themselves too! On a laptop whats more! The film came out to a lot of internet buzz and rapidly became the talk of tinseltown, who were these guys and what was with all the zombies?!
Now six years on, their follow up film is just getting the final touches and seeing screens at festivals around the world before the wide release in 2010. Daybreakers is a vampire story with a twist and it looks pretty damn impressive! It features a huge cast of great actors including Ethan Hawke, Sam Neil and Willem Dafoe, as well as some truly inspired visuals.
With the assistance of the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Cinematographers Society we were lucky enough to sit down with the Brothers Spierig to talk about their careers, working with blood and their next project, a Sci-fi retelling of the classic pirate tale “Captain Blood”.
The interview also contains clips from their films and some great footage from Daybreakers, we hope you enjoy it!

This movie looks great- good to see Ethan Hawke back on the scene. The Daybreakers facebook page is cool too- http://bit.ly/3B1JlG
Undead was so incredibly good – much cleverer than you’d expect from what initially seemed like a bit of a piss-take. I didn’t know they had something new on the way…but I look forward to it.
I actually thought Daybreakers was just ok..
